Don’t stay in downtown Portland. There’s no benefit. Portland is an extremely small big city. Heads up that you’ll want to book accommodations outside of downtown. There isn’t really any reason to be there at night and it’s not particularly pleasant, but totally fine for passing through to get to a particular place.The Oregon Zoo, originally the Portland Zoo and later the Washington Park Zoo, is located in Washington Park approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) west-southwest of downtown Portland just off Highway 26. You'll be close enough to downtown and the west side of the river but walking distance to tons of bars and restaurants at night. Plus there is Mt. Tabor for sunsets a short 5 minute drive away.
Came at 24 in 2015 - chose Portland because I wanted to live in a place that cared about the environment, had a good live music scene, and where more people thought like I did.
Portland has a very accepting, live & let live (for the most part) vibe. It is wonderful. You can come as you are and be any kind of weirdo you want. No one cares. The insular part is more on a personal level, kind of introverted, guarded, cordial but not actually going to follow up on that coffee date they suggested.Yeah nightlife is very weak here. This is more of an outdoor kind of place with lots of hiking, biking, running, kayaking, skiing, etc. meet-ups. So finding and getting involved in them might be a better investment of your time an efforts to .45 East is probably the closest you'll get, personally I would absolutely never go to a club in old Town. Easily the most dangerous part of town by a landslide. 45 East has a lot of EDM and is the place if you're looking to dance/rave. .Coming from Indiana, the weather will be perfectly fine for you. I moved here from Ohio. The weather in Portland is so mild it blows my mind people complain about it so much. Also, shopping at Winco will save you loads on groceries (cash or debit only).
I read the thread and here are a few additional ideas! -take the sky tram for the views -try kava at the Pied Cow. -ride the max to the underground stop near the zoo. It is one of the deepest rail stations in the world. -sip a drink and read a novel at a jazz bar.

A few more: Rose VL and Ha VL are two modest Vietnamese restaurants that make the best soups in the world.r/askportland • Portlander's, given how Goodwill and other thrift shops have raised prices to absurd levels, do you know of any organizations in town where one can make donations of their stuff that will actually end up helping people instead of just stuffing the pockets of greedy fat cats?If wanting to stay downtown in style then The Nines, The Heathman, & Hotel Deluxe is where I would recommend. If looking for more budget friendly there are some nice national brand options near the Convention Center. These would also be very close to public transit (bus & train & streetcar). All options mentioned would be considered central.
